Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau expressed concerns during a closed-door meeting on February 7 with business leaders about the intentions of the Trump administration, suggesting that Trump may genuinely wish to annex Canada to acquire its abundant natural resources. Trudeau highlighted that the U.S. government is aware of the critical mineral resources Canada possesses, which could be one of the real reasons behind Trump's proposal to annex Canada.
Previously, Trump had repeatedly mentioned the idea of incorporating Canada into the United States. Although Canadian officials initially dismissed it as a joke, Trudeau explicitly pointed out this time that such remarks might reflect the true intentions of the Trump administration. He emphasized, "The U.S. wants to benefit from the resources we have, and annexing Canada might be seen as their most direct method."
Trudeau stated that Canada needs to prepare for potential trade challenges and expand more opportunities in international markets. He stressed that although Canada has interests and faces challenges in trade with the United States, under the threat of Trump’s tariff policies, Canada still needs to firmly maintain its position.
Additionally, Trudeau mentioned that if the U.S. continues to impose tariffs, Canada will take reciprocal measures, but the goal remains to lift these sanctions swiftly and find a new balance point in the long-term political and economic relationship. He also called for Canada to strengthen its external trade strategies in the coming months to enhance economic resilience to face potential long-term challenges from the U.S.
