President Trump's cabinet is closely monitoring Elon Musk's movements, preparing to regain control of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) after Musk reduces his working hours there. According to two informed government sources, once Musk steps back, Trump’s cabinet members may limit the influence of DOGE employees and regain control over the department's budget and staffing, particularly during the austerity measures implemented under Musk's leadership. The department, created on Trump's inauguration day and primarily led by Musk, has pushed a series of massive layoffs, contract cancellations, and reduced federal services to American citizens.
Musk recently confirmed he would reduce his government working time to one or two days a week to focus on his electric car company Tesla, raising questions about the future operations of DOGE. Musk’s term as a special government employee is set to expire at the end of May. Nonetheless, White House spokesperson Harrison Fields stated that Musk will continue to play a role in the presidential agenda.
As Musk turns to more commercial affairs, Trump’s cabinet members gradually strengthen their control over the department, particularly regarding budget decision-making authority. Cabinet members believe Musk's high-profile presence limited their power, and once he exits, they will be able to implement more targeted spending cuts. The cabinet ministers are more actively pushing for budget decisions, which will enhance their position in government efficiency and spending strategies.
Trump cabinet ministers have also experienced friction while collaborating with Musk. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy have clashed with Musk over various policy issues. These tensions have intensified discussions within the Trump administration about Musk's expanding influence. As Musk shifts focus to commercial affairs such as Tesla and SpaceX, the Trump administration's grip on the DOGE department strengthens.
Musk previously stated that the "cleanup" of government finances is largely complete, and the department is already in an automated operation state. He mentioned the main tasks of the DOGE team are finished, but with his departure, the department will need a new leader. The White House has appointed Amy Gleason as acting administrator, yet discrepancies seem to exist between Trump and the White House's stance.
Although Musk's role in the government's daily operations has always been somewhat ambiguous, as he gradually reduces his government duties, significant changes in leadership within DOGE are anticipated. Analysts suggest that Musk's decreased visibility may lead to greater departmental efficiency, as reduced focus on him could promote team independence and effective operations.
As Musk's role gradually recedes, the Trump cabinet's reform plans and government efficiency strategies will continue to advance in his absence, and the concentration of cabinet power may have profound impacts on the future operation of the government.
