Trump Bets His Presidency on Iran
Last weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump unexpectedly approved strikes on multiple Iranian nuclear facilities, marking one of the boldest and riskiest foreign policy decisions of his presidency. This military action not only broke his long-standing promise to avoid military interventions but also escalated the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, drawing global attention.
Massive Bombs Target Iranian Nuclear Sites
According to the White House, the targets of this strike included Iran's heavily guarded underground Fordow nuclear facility. The U.S. used high-penetration "bunker buster" bombs for the airstrike. Trump later claimed the operation was a "great success" but did not provide detailed assessments of casualties or damage.
Senior White House officials stated that Trump hesitated before the action and once considered restarting negotiations with Tehran. But when he ultimately believed Iran was not willing to return to the negotiating table to abandon its nuclear program, he decided that a military strike was the only viable option.
Iran Vows Revenge, U.S. Interests in the Middle East at Risk
However, this military gamble could have severe repercussions. The Iranian government did not back down, and its atomic energy agency emphasized it would not abandon its "national industry," with state television boldly stating, "Every American is a legitimate target." Analysts fear Iran might retaliate with the following measures:
- Blocking the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off a third of the world's oil shipping route
- Attacking U.S. military bases in the Middle East and Israeli allies
- Increasing the frequency of rocket attacks on Israel
- Using "proxy wars" to harass U.S. interests globally
If these actions persist, they could escalate into an "endless Middle Eastern war"—a trap Trump has sharply criticized and vowed to avoid.
Political Turbulence at Home, Trump Faces Bipartisan Pressure
The strike on Iran has also caused a significant stir domestically. Democrats criticized Trump for bypassing congressional authorization to use military force, questioning whether he abused his power. Some non-interventionist factions within the Republican Party also expressed dissatisfaction, fearing the U.S. could be entangled in a long-term war once again.
Even though Trump did not encounter a large-scale foreign crisis during his first term, just six months into his second term, he is embroiled in this high-risk conflict, placing the White House under immense pressure.
Middle East Situation on the Brink of Uncontrol
It is still unclear whether Iran will retaliate immediately, but the situation is already highly tense. With Israeli airstrikes escalating and Iranian militia groups mobilizing rapidly, the whole Middle East teeters on the edge of war.
Experts widely believe that if the U.S. cannot effectively "wind down" through diplomatic means, this round of actions could trigger a chain reaction of conflicts, even repeating the "perpetual battleground" crises like those in Iraq and Afghanistan.
