Musk's Political Comments Cause Stirring, Tesla Hit Hard in UK Market
As public discontent with Musk's political involvement continues to grow, Tesla has faced significant setbacks in the UK market. On June 4th, data released by the UK research agency New AutoMotive showed that Tesla's new car sales in May plummeted by over 45% compared to the same period last year, with its market share rapidly declining.
UK Sales Halved, Market Position Threatened
The data indicates that Tesla sold only 1,758 new cars in the UK in May this year, a sharp decline of 45.8% from 3,244 cars in the same period last year. Although Tesla remains the best-selling pure electric car brand in the UK since 2025, its lead in the market is quickly eroding.
The New AutoMotive report highlights BYD's strong performance in the UK, contrasting with Tesla. BYD's May sales doubled to 1,388 units, gradually closing the gap with Tesla.
Musk's Political Stance Provokes Consumer Displeasure
Industry experts widely believe that Musk's recent frequent political statements are a key factor in the damage to Tesla's brand image. Musk's public support for the UK's far-right party "Reform UK," criticism of the current government, and calls for a new election have created consumer resentment. His political interventions have sparked widespread debate in British society, affecting public emotional connections to the Tesla brand.
This situation is not unique to the UK. Data shows that Tesla's sales in Spain, Portugal, Denmark, and Sweden also fell sharply in May, suggesting Musk's political remarks have triggered a chain reaction across multiple European countries.
Multiple Factors Contribute to Sales Decline
Apart from the CEO's political controversy, Tesla's sales drop in the UK is also influenced by other factors. These include increasing consumer concerns about the UK's economic outlook, unclear government direction on automotive environmental policies, and intensified market competition. Traditional car manufacturers and emerging brands are vigorously entering the electric vehicle market, providing a wider range of models and more competitively priced options, exerting significant pressure on Tesla.
Overall Demand for Electric Cars Continues to Grow
Despite Tesla's poor performance, the UK's overall electric vehicle market is still expanding. New AutoMotive data shows that the total number of new car registrations in the UK in May 2025 was 144,098, a year-on-year increase of 4.3%. Among them, pure electric car sales grew by 28% year-on-year, demonstrating strong market demand.
This indicates that Tesla's issues do not stem from the industry's broader environment but are more closely related to brand strategy, public perception, and the actions of its leadership. The electric vehicle market remains vibrant, but if Tesla cannot rebuild trust with consumers, its leading position will face serious challenges.
Future Outlook: Should Tesla Consider "De-Muskization"?
Under the dual pressures of public opinion and declining sales, some analysts suggest that Tesla may need to adjust its public relations strategy, downplay Musk's personal influence, and reshape its brand image to restore its impact in the European market. Otherwise, even if the product remains strong, a fragmented corporate image will continue to weaken its competitive position.
