On February 12, 2025, U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin had a long and productive phone conversation, during which they discussed several important topics in depth. Trump stated that the call mainly focused on the Ukraine conflict, the situation in the Middle East, energy issues, artificial intelligence, and the strong U.S. dollar. In particular, both parties expressed a desire to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict through negotiations and agreed to further cooperation, including arranging mutual visits to each other's countries.
Trump emphasized that a consensus had been reached, and that teams from both sides would immediately begin negotiations. The primary task is to communicate with Ukrainian President Zelensky to inform him about the call's content. Trump also directed senior officials, such as the Secretary of State, CIA Director, and National Security Advisor, to lead the negotiation efforts, expressing confidence in the success of these talks.
Meanwhile, Kremlin Press Secretary Peskov also confirmed the call's details, revealing that Putin and Trump's conversation lasted nearly an hour and a half. Putin invited Trump to visit Moscow and expressed willingness to host U.S. officials, including those involved in discussions about the Ukraine issue. Putin emphasized that addressing the root causes of the Ukraine problem is key to achieving lasting peace.
On the same day, Ukrainian President Zelensky also spoke with Trump by phone to discuss the prospects for peace. Zelensky revealed on social media that the conversation included cooperation between the two countries' teams, particularly in fields like drone production. Trump briefed Zelensky on his call with Putin, and Zelensky stated that Ukraine's desire for peace is stronger than that of any other nation. He emphasized in the conversation that Ukraine is working with the U.S. on joint measures to halt Russian military actions and achieve lasting peace.
This communication between Russia and the U.S. is considered an important step towards resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Although the negotiation process may encounter challenges, there is general optimism that the effort to resolve the conflict has entered a positive phase, with more diplomatic contacts and consultations expected soon.
This interaction suggests that tensions between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine might ease, and there is growing hope for achieving a ceasefire and lasting peace.
